Why did I receive a Notice of Registration Suspension from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYS DMV)?
You received a Notice of Registration Suspension because a vehicle registered to you incurred five (5) or more toll violations, at one of the toll authorities listed above, on different days in an 18-month period. As of the date on the Notice, payment for these toll violations was not received from you, or you have not successfully disputed the violations.
I don’t want my registration to be suspended. What do I do?
You may pay the amount due prior to the suspension effective date listed on the NYS DMV’s Notice of Registration Suspension. If payment is received at least five (5) days prior to the suspension effective date, the pending registration suspension will be cleared. If payment is received fewer than five (5) days prior to the suspension effective date, your registration may still be suspended until your payment is processed and the suspension is cleared with the NYS DMV. Visit www.dmv.ny.com to check the status of your registration.

There are several ways to pay your toll violations:

By Mail – send your check or money order (no cash) to: E-ZPass New York, DMV Registration Suspension, P.O. Box 149005, Staten Island, NY 10314-9005.

By Phone – call the E-ZPass Customer Service Center at 718-313-9414 and provide the customer service specialist with the license plate number listed on the Notice of Registration Suspension. Credit card, debit card, and bank account debit are accepted payment methods.

In Person – visit one of our E-ZPass Customer Service walk-in centers. Click Customer Service Center locations for addresses and hours of operation.

Online – at www.e-zpassny.com/payviolation. You can also check the status of a violation or attempt to resolve a violation.

Please know any returned or bounced payments will result in either continuing or re-submitting the suspension request to the NYS DMV.

Why did my vehicle incur toll violations?
Toll violations are issued for the following reasons:
  • The vehicle, for which you are the registered owner, was driven across a toll bridge, tunnel, or roadway without a valid E-ZPass Tag or without paying the toll as required; OR
  • The Toll Bills, which were mailed to you as the registered vehicle owner, were not paid.
Where can I find the amount due for the toll violations?
The amount you owe is shown or each toll violation notice issued to you and the Agency to whom the toll violations are owed. You may also contact the E-ZPass Customer Service Center at 718-313-9414 to speak with a customer service specialist for information on your outstanding violations. A listing of the unpaid violations may be sent to you upon your request.
Could I have other toll violations that are not included with the registration suspension request, but that could lead to another suspension?
Yes, the NYS DMV requires a minimum of 5 violations within an 18-month period to allow a request to suspend your vehicle registration.
I moved and did not update my address with the NYS DMV. What can I do?
If you change your residence, you are required under New York State Law to update your address with the NYS DMV within 10 days of moving. Visit www.dmv.ny.gov to check the status of your registration. You also need to notify the NYS DMV of your address change.
I am not sure these toll violations are my responsibility. What can I do?
You may dispute the toll violations if you believe you are not responsible for them. To do this, contact the E-ZPass Customer Service Center at 718-313-9414 to speak with a customer service specialist regarding your outstanding toll violations and ask for further explanation regarding the dispute process. Please note that all disputes need to be resolved at least five (5) days prior to the suspension effective date listed on the Notice of Registration Suspension. If your dispute is resolved less than five (5) days prior to the suspension effective date, your registration may still be suspended until your suspension is cleared with the NYS DMV. Visit www.dmv.ny.gov to check the status of your registration.

Reasons for requesting a dispute, and documentation to demonstrate that you are not responsible, include:

  • You sold your vehicle associated with the toll violations related to the registration suspension prior to the violation dates. You will need to provide a copy of your proof of sale.
  • You surrendered the license plate associated with the toll violations related to the registration suspension prior to the violation dates. You will need to provide a copy of the plate surrender receipt from the NYS DMV.
  • The license plate associated with the toll violations related to the registration suspension was reported stolen prior to the violation dates. You will need to provide a copy of the police report.
  • The toll violations related to the registration suspension were paid. You will need to provide proof of payment. This could be a copy of a canceled check, money order, E-ZPass statement, or a toll receipt. For checks, please provide copies of both the front and back of the check.
  • For other good cause. You will need to provide any additional information to support your dispute of the violations.
I want to contest the Notice of Registration Suspension with the NYS DMV. What do I do?
Please follow the instructions on the Notice of Registration Suspension you received. All requests for in-person or affidavit hearings must be sent to: Division of Safety and Business Hearing, Room 424A, 6 Empire State Plaza, Albany, NY 12228, not the E-ZPass New York Customer Service Center.

If you think the toll violations that led to your Notice of Registration Suspension are not your responsibility, please see the FAQ “I am not sure these toll violations are my responsibility. What can I do?”

I had a hearing with the NYS DMV, but was told that my registration is suspended. How can I appeal the decision?
Please follow the instructions on the Findings and Disposition for Non-Payment of Tolls you received from the NYS DMV under the “Right to Appeal” section or visit www.dmv.ny.gov. Do not send your NYS DMV appeal request to the E-ZPass New York Customer Service Center.
I paid my toll violations. What do I do next?
Once payment for the toll violations related to the registration suspension is received by the E-ZPass New York Customer Service Center, the NYS DMV will be notified and the suspension will be cleared. If you made a payment fewer than five (5) days prior to or after the suspension effective date, please allow five (5) days for the suspension to be cleared. Visit www.dmv.ny.gov to check the status of your registration.
